Richardsons boat landing

I am a concerned citizen of Berkeley County. As a boater myself, I understand the dangers of the Richardsons Boat landing in Bonneau, South Carolina.  This boat landing was a “no swimming” area.  Santee Cooper owns this boat landing. Santee Cooper has now opened the Richardsons boat landing as a public swimming area. Santee cooper blocked off a huge section to the swimmers. Santee Cooper only gave boaters a small area to use for unloading and loading boats. In the afternoons when most boaters are coming off the water. The boat landing is jammed packed. You have a really hard time finding a place to dock your boat, get your vehicle and get your boat loaded. Santee Cooper should have gave the boaters some of the beach area so they could park the boats . You almost need two people on a boat, one that knows how to back a trailer and one that can drive a boat. If you do not have someone that can do either then you have a real issue at this landing.  This was once one of the best boat landings in the area.

Santee Cooper also does not provide a life guard at this public swimming area. The swimming area is really deep, because when it was made, they dug it deep for boats. I would be afraid to have young children swimming in this area. Bonneau has a area at the point that would make a great public swimming area. I do not understand why, everyone wants to swim at the Richardsons boat landing.  Swimmers have been known to jump off the sidewalls in front of boats as they are coming into the landing. This is very dangerous. Boats do not have breaks and accidents can happen.  I really can not understand why Santee Cooper would even want this liability.

storms

Afternoon storms, can pop up rather quickly on Lake Moultrie. Some boaters, will ride the storm out wherever they may be on the lake. Other boaters ,will try to make it to the boat landing. Can you imagine all the boats trying to get into this boat landing? They have no where to turn once they get there.  It seems like Santee Cooper would be interested in safety.

Please help to save a life and sign this petition to Santee Cooper.

Oh and here is Santee Coopers reply:

Statute 50-21-148, which talks about obstructions of a pier, dock, wharf, boat ramp or access area, does apply. (We’ve posted this statute at the boat landing.) A person swimming near the boat landing is considered an obstruction and can be subject to a fine or more. Santee Cooper’s law enforcement agents and DNR can enforce this statute. In addition, there is an area where no boats are allowed that’s safer for swimming. This area is highly visible with buoys and ropes. We heard your concerns and safety is a top priority. Our law enforcement agents will be increasing patrols. We’ve also made DNR aware of the situation and have requested increased patrols from them.

How To Survive Without Electricity For 5 Days

ice storm

The ice storm that wrecked havoc on my life. I live in South Carolina we do not get snow or ice very often. Yes, I know Northerners make fun of us when a storm hits. Most business, and schools will close when we get a storm. We are not equipped to handle snow and ice. Bus drivers are not used to driving children in these conditions nor are most people here. On Wednesday we had a ice storm, the news media did not make it a big deal. I worked until 5 P.M. on Tuesday evening.  I did not get a chance to stop by a grocery store after work.

I was without electricity for 5 days. I would have never in my entire life thought where I live would have been without power for that long. As ,I am writing this post there are still approximately 91 homes in my county without power.

This is not a family vacation for bonding. This was not a planned camping trip. This is my home that I live in.  You may not realize how much you depend on water, hot water at that . You will miss having a hot shower. Wash clothes,  is something we can not do without power.

My family had it better than some people but none then less it was not a normal life. Some people got power rather quickly, some never lost power. You will have very little people offer you to come to their home to get a shower or to even stay. Luckily ,I thought I had to work on Wednesday morning and got a shower. I also asked someone on Facebook if anyone had power and if I could come shower.  I had a few friends say”come on over”.

Do you have big Labor Day Weekend Plans?

I remember when I was young and living at home with my parents we always went camping on Labor Day Weekend. I loved spending the weekend at the lake.My parents and their friends would have the best food and everyone would bring a side dish. I really miss those days sometimes. Now, that I am older and have a family of my own, we do not do anything on Labor Day Weekend.

My husband is a deer hunter and he raised my daughter to be a deer hunter. They spend Labor Day weekend hunting.I don’t complain and think it is great they are out in the woods. I always enjoy a nice weekend at home.I will take this labor day weekend and clean house and organize some. I am so ready for a 3 day weekend.

With Labor Day Weekend, coming up means Fall is right around the corner. I am so ready for bonfires, roasting marshmallows and spending weekends having cookouts with friends.

My family seems to stay on the go at all times, and I am the one that likes to take things on the much slower level. This year,I am going to be on the go for the next few weeks. I can not wait to share all the details soon.

What great vacations have you taken this year?
